Prophylaxis (Teeth Cleaning)

A dental prophylaxis is a cleaning treatment performed to thoroughly clean the teeth and gums. Prophylaxis, in conjunction with thorough daily brushing and flossing, is an important dental treatment for keeping the oral cavity in proper health and stopping the progression of gingivitis and periodontal disease.  We recommend that prophylaxis be performed twice annually as a preventative measure, and in some cases, more often.

The benefits include:

Plaque Removal – As plaque builds up, it forms calculus (tartar) both above and below the gum line which can result in serious periodontal problems. Even with a proper home brushing and flossing, it can be impossible to remove all plaque and debris.  A prophylaxis appointment is necessary so a dentist or dental hygienist can use specialized dental instruments to thoroughly clean your teeth.

A Brighter Smile – Stained teeth can dramatically decrease the appearance of a smile. Prophylaxis is an effective treatment in removing extrinsic stains caused by certain foods, beverages, and tobacco.

Fresher Breath – Bad breath (or halitosis) can be an embarrassing situation. The routine removal of plaque, calculus, and bacteria at our office can noticeably improve halitosis.

Reinforcement of Oral Hygiene Techniques  At each appointment, our dental hygienist reviews brushing and flossing techniques.  We also answer any questions you may have regarding your oral hygiene.
